This festival honors Qu Yuan, who served in the court of Emperor Huai, until he fell out of favor and was exiled. When news of the defeat of his mother country reached him, he flung himself into the Miluo River. The Chinese people searched for his body and threw food into the water to feed the fish, shrimp and lobster so they wouldn’t eat the body. Since then, Qu Yuan has been remembered with dragon boat races and other activities. The celebration is a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of the year.
